TRAIN's goals are always driven by our Mission Statement and may change from time to time based on the concerns of its members. The current goals being pursued by TRAIN are: 1. Improve the safety of children with food allergies in the Reading school system. Once a child with food allergies leaves the care of a parent and enters school, the potential for a life-threatening reaction is much higher. TRAIN will work to improve the level of awareness, preparedness, and management of students with food allergies in the Reading school system. TRAIN is not interested in making the lifestyles of other families difficult. Rather, TRAIN is respectfully requesting the help of the community of Reading in preventing children with food allergies from suffering reactions, most importantly a fatal reaction due to preventable food exposure. Quite simply, we cannot succeed in this goal without the kindness, support, and understanding of everyone in Reading. We need your help. 2. Build strong support within the community, especially among parents whose children do not have food allergies. Our efforts within the schools require the understanding and cooperation of many, especially with parents of children who do not have food allergies. It would be a disservice to everyone, most especially all of our children, if our efforts resulted in any division within the strong school community we have in place. TRAIN is intent on working with parents and other members of the school community in a positive and pro-active way, in an effort to preserve the strong sense of school community and civic responsibility here in Reading. 3. Educate others in the community on food-allergy facts and myths. It is difficult for many to comprehend that the smallest exposure to a certain food can lead to death for some children (and adults). Indeed this fact seems contradictory to how we expect our bodies to work. An important part of promoting safer environments is to provide the medical information needed to achieve a real awareness of this issue. |
